Emory Loyd Sutton

  
       The Emory Loyd Sutton family's story in Barber County, Kansas, begins
     when Emory and Lena (Sternberger) Sutton moved here from Oklahoma a year
     after their marriage on February 9, 1913. They lived on the Jacob Achenbach
     place one mile west of Hardtner until 1918, when they bought their own farm
     six miles west and 2 1/2 miles north of Hardtner, where they resided the
     remainder of their lives. Lena died on January 17, 1953, Emory on July 8,
     1963.
       Emory was born in St. Joseph, Missouri April 6, 1891, to Jason and Rebecca
     Register Sutton, the fourth of six children. When he was 13 years old, his
     family came to Woods County, Oklahoma. He stowed away on a railcar with the
     horses, in order to take care of them on the trip down. Upon their arrival
     in Oklahoma, they lived in a tent unitl better quarters were available.
       Lena Sternberger was born in Crippen, Germany, on December 3, 1883 to
     Phillip, Sr. and Louise Hickswolten Sternberger, the only daughter and the
     fifth of eight living children. Her father came to the United States in 1883
     and sent for the family the following year. They first settled in Harper
     County, coming to Woods County at the opening of the Cherokee Strip.
       They were the parents of ten children. One daughter died at birth. Ophal
     lost her life in a car accident in 1940 shortly after she had started
     teaching school. John died at age 3 years. Although the parents' educational
     opportunities were limited, they believed in education for their children.
     All of them graduated from Hardtner High School, and two of the girls
     graduated from Northwestern State Univesity in Alva, Oklahoma. Three of
     them from Wichita School of Nursing. Mr. Sutton served on the board of the
     Eldred School district many years.
       Louise married Clifford Morrow and had three sons: Eugene Allan, who at
     the age of twleve made his home with his grandparents; Charles; and David,
     who died as a result of a combine accident at 3 years of age. Louise later
     married George Rebel and now lives in Alva, Oklahoma.
       Beatrice is a registered nurse in New York City, where she is on the staff
     of Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. Beulah is married to Anthony Venza and
     has three children: Joseph, Maria and Helen. She is presently working in a
     doctor's office as a registered nurse in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
       Darline is married to Hubert Beatty and has two boys: Stanley and James.
     She is a registerd nurse, but has retired. She lives in Merced, California.
     Lela Mae is married to Virn McElwain and has five children: William, Janice,
     Russel, Warren and Lois. She teaches school in Arlington Heights, Illinois.
       Both Lloyd and George were in the Army during WWII. Lloyd was stationed
     in Maryland. George was with the Occupation Forces in Japan. Lloyd married
     Maxine Moad of Sun City, Kansas. They are the parents of four: Gregory,
     Edwin, and Rebecca; Douglas died in 1952 at the age of 2 years. Lloyd is
     farming northwest of Hardtner.
       George married Joan Hinze and has five children: John, James, Emily,
     Thomas and William. He lives and farms the home place.
