Kenneth L. Swiggart
The Swiggart family moved to Medicine Lodge May 1, 1955. Kenneth was born
and raised in Wichita, Kansas and Ellen was born and raised in Era, Texas.
They met and were married in Wichita May 29, 1944. Kenneth was employed as
service manager for Jim Earp Motors in Wichita when he met I.N. 'Jibo'
Hewitt. Jibo invited him to Medicine lOdge to see if he would like to take
over his business known as HiWay Sales. Jibo was such a fine person that
Ellen and Kenneth decided to look over the business and city. They liked
it and now after 24 years, they love it because it's home.
Kenneth and Ellen ahve three sons, Kenneth Michael, Larry Lawrence and
Brad Leon. All three attended the Medicine Lodge public schools and Kenneth
M. went to York College in York, Nebraska, and Hays State at Hays, Kansas.
Kenneth and wife Mary and their four children, Michael, Shannon, Brandon
and Rhiannon now live in Dallas, Texas where Kenneth is in the insurance
business.
Larry attended the Kansas City Vo-Tec school to learn the auto body
repair trade. Larry, his wife Sherry and their son Aaron now reside in
Sandy, Oregon where Larry operates a boyd and paint shop. Larry also has
a son Matthew Leon who lives in Wichita, Kansas.
Brad went to Hutchinson Juco and Emporia State College, then worked for
the Washington Post and Ft. Lauderdale Herald newspapers. He now makes his
home in Bend, Oregon and is recreation director for the youth and senior
citizens of the Bend Park area.
Ellen and Kenneth feel very fortunate that they were able to raise their
sons in this wonderful community where they have so many friends.
Kenneth really found out that he was a part of this city and how many
friends he has, because in April of 1977 he was elected mayor and again
in April 1979, this time to a four year term. His prayer is that he can
live up to the trust bestowed upon him.
Kenneth and Ellen are members of the Medicine Lodge Church of Christ and
enjoy worshipping God with their brothes and sisters.
When they find the time, their hobby is looking for depression glass in
the Iris pattern. They have a small collection and really enjoy it.
The Kenneth Swiggarts are happy to live in this community and hope to
continue until death.
