Arthur P. Tatera
The Arthur P. Tatera family are not pioneers of Barber County, but settled
into the Medicine Lodge Community in July of 1949, when Arthur (better known
as Art) lauhched his career in the Chiropractic Profession. Art was born in
(1921) and reared in Chicago, Illinois. While serving in the Army Air Force
during WWII, Art was stationed at Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka, Kansas
where he met Omah Denny, (born 1924) a native Kansan from Burlingame. After
completion of his overseas duty, Art asked Omah to meet him in Chicago where
they were married in September 1944.
Art attended Kansas State Chiropractic College in Wichita, Kansas, receiving
his degree in 1949.
Arriving in Medicine Lodge with Art and Omah were daughters Carole Janine,
age 3, (born in 1946 in Chicago, Illinois) and Marilyn Kay, age 1, (born 1948,
in Wichita, Kansas). Native Barber Countians added to this family are Helen Gayle,
1952; Roberta Louise, 1955; Arthur Robert, 1958; and Valerie Sue, 1962.
In 1967 Omah went back to college, having attended one year in 1941-2 at
Washburn University. She graduated in 1970 from NWSC, Alva, Oklahoma with a
BA degree in Music Education. She taught half-days for two eyars at Sharon
and Isabel Elementary Schools. For the past seven years she has been teaching
in the Elementary Schools of Medicine Lodge.
All of the daughters are married, and from these unions there are seven
grandchildren. Arthur Robert is a senior at Washburn University with plans
to continue in Law School.
Art is a member of the State Chiropratic Association, Knights of Columbus,
American Legion, and the Veterans of Foreign WArs. Both Art and Omah are
members of teh Holy Rosary Catholic Church where both have served faithfully.
Medicine Lodge and Barber County have been kind to us, and we are proud to
be a part of their continuing heritage.
