George Traffas


     George Traffas was born August 26, 1903 in Olpe, Kansas. He was the oldest of 15
  children born to Michael and Mary Traffas and later moved with them to a farm one-
  half mile south of Sharon. His elementary education was cut short when he was 13 and
  he took work as a farmhand outside of the home to help support the family. He married
  Nora Ricke, daughter of Joe and Mary Ricke of Medicine Lodgein 1929. They set up
  housekeeping in a four room house east of Zenda and farmed 105 acres of land. In
  1938 they bought a four room house and 120 acres of farmland four and a half miles
  SW of Sharon, which in following years gew to 480 acres. He raised mostly wheat,
  maize, alphalfa, and livestock of dairy cows, beef cattle and hogs. He went into the
  egg business in 1956 which expanded to 3,600 hens within a few years. In 1972 they
  purchased the Convent from St. Boniface Parish and retired. However, Geroge still
  makes daily trips to the farm and actively participates in running it.
     George and Nora have attended St. Boniface Church all of their marriaged life
  except for a few years in Zenda, and are well known througout southern Kansas.
     Eleven children were born to this union which marked its 50th year on April 2,
  1979, and culminated in a Golden Jubilee celetration on August 4 attended by all
  eleven children and 27 grandchildren. They also have one great-grandchild.
     Robert (5-2-30) Married Rowena Rhodes, 1954. Branch Manager of Security Pacific
  National Bank, Arcadia, California and reside in San Dimas. Their four children are
  Kent, Denise, Tom and Allen.
     Leo (7-28-31) Married Jeanette Jacobs, 1958. Employed by Dari Gold Creamery in
  McMinnville, Oregon. They live on a small farm in Carlton, and have seven children,
  Michael, Greg, Pat, Lynette, Gary, John and Steven.
     LaVern (3-5-33) Married James McDonald, 1954. Jim is Division Administrator for 
  the Federal Highway Administration in Louisiana. They live in Baton Rouge and their
  three children are Mark, Karen and Michael.
     Sister Diane (Lucille 1-24-35) Made final vows as Dominican Nun in 1958. She has
  taught parochial education for the past 22 years, including 16 months in Amakohia,
  Nigeria. She is presently Principal of Christ the King School in Oklahoma City.
     Marjorie (9-21-36) Married Andrew Patterson in 1960. Andy is a practicing attorney
  in West Covina, Calif. Their five children are Michael, Craig, Kathy, Timothy, and 
  Joe. Their home is in Hacienda Heights.
     Melvin (2-14-40) Married Karin Butterman of Berlin, Germany, 1966. Owns and operates
  Valley Grocery in Sharon. They have two sons, Sven and Daniel and live in Sharon.
     Georgianne (11-14042) Married Jack Gibson, 1963. Jack is employed at Tinker Air
  Force Base, and Georgianne is executive secretary for City-County Health Dept. in
  Oklahoma City, where they live. They have two sons, Bryan and Brent.
     Larry (12-21-43) Married Julie Stamm, 1978. They live and work on the old home
  place and have two children, Eric and Rebecca. Larry is also a Registered Nurse at
  Anthony Hospital.
     Ellen (7-15-46) Received her Nursing Degree in 1969, and has worked as a Registered
  Nurse in Kansas and Oklahoma. She is presently Public Health Nurse of Kiowa Co., and
  lives in Greensburg.
     Dennis (2-22-48) Married Victoria Raven of Kansas City. Dennis is manager and part-
  owner of Ma Vittles Restaurant in Columbia, South Carolina, where they live. They have
  one daughter, Larissa.
     Leon (5-26-52) Married Sharon Yates, 1974. Leon is employed by City-County Health
  Dept. in Oklahoma City. Leon and Sharon are also attending college. They reside in
  Oklahoma City with their son, Scotty.
