Roy E. Travis
The Lincoln Library was built by Roy E. Travis in 1940. He left the
Dillon Store in St. John, Kansas to see the Tom Jewell store, but saw
the space west on Main Street and decided to built a grocery store.
The family came down to Medicine Lodge and found a place to live on
Walnut. The grocery store was completed and opened in April 1940.
Ivol Howard got the store in 1942, but had to leave it for the army.
Then it was rented to several different people. It was torn down by a
boy with his car and had to be rebuilt. It continued as rental property.
In 1966 the building was purchased and remodeled to its present function,
the Lincoln Library. The persons responsible for this were Laura Cooke,
J.S. Eaton, Jan Forsyth, Bob Gilmore, Turelda Hoffer, John Johnson and
Barbara MacGregor.
Roy and Florence Travis have two daughters: Janis Elizabeth who married
G.R. Friedeman in 1952, and Carole Lynn wo wed Maurice Boughton in 1954.
Janis has four sons and one daughter and Carole has one son and three
daughters.
The daughters gave a 50th Anniversary celebration for Roy and Florence
on June 3, 1978.
