Jona Unruh

The Joha Unruhs came to Sharon in May, 1969, when Jona accepted the call
to pastor the Sharon Baptist Church. The family moved from Sublette, Kansas,
where both Jerry and Jonine graduated from high school. Jerry graduated from
Hutchinson Community Junior College and enlisted in the U.S.A. Military Police.
Honine graduated from Sidney's School of Cosmetology in Hutchinson.
Upon coming to Sharon, Melinda enrolled as a sophomore at Sharon High and
Jim became one of Mrs. Richey's 4th graders. Mrs. Unruh, Maxine, served as
librarian for the Zenda, Nashville and Willowdale schools for three years
before coming to Sharon High School where she is the librarian and teaches
     some English classes.
Coming to Sharon was almost like a "homecoming" to the Unruhs for their
first seven year pastorate was at Argonia, Kansas. Jonine and Melinda were
both born while we were in ARgonia and Jerry was born in Fort Worth, Texas
during out "seminary years" there, which followed close on the heals of the
     "Army years."
Soon after moving to Sharon, Maxine discovered that Grandfather McCager
Lakey, a circuit-rider Methodist minister, had held a tent meeting in Sharon
in early 1900. The Unruhs visited his homestead near Waterloo, Kansas and met
people whose churches he had helped organize.
Jona's hometown is McPherson, Kansas and Maxine's is Carmen, Oklahoma. They
met and married during college days in Alva, Oklahoma. After Jona served in
the army during WWII they attended seminary and then came back to Kansas for
pastorates and teaching at St. Joh, Argonia, Ness City, Cedar Vale, and
     Sublette before coming to Sharon.
Melinda and Jim are both graduates of SHS. At the present time Jerry is a
Warrant Officer, (USA) in Korea. Jonine manages a beauty shop in Emporia.
Melinda Simmons teaches ARt in New Jersey. Home to the Unruhs is Sharon.
It's great to be an active part of a busy small community.
