Frederick Utt
Frederick and Mary Utt were married in 1901. Frederick came with his
family from Illinois and Mary was from Missouri. They ran in the Cherokee
Strip and homesteaded a farm 1 1/2 miles south of Hardtner, Kansas, in
Oklahoma. Here two of their seven children were born - Gladys and Ernest.
In 1908 the Utts moved to a farm six miles east of Kiowa, Kansas; there
Frances, Pomroy and Lois were born. Freida was born in Deerhead, Kansas,
before the move to the Kiowa area. The children attended the elementary
grades at King's College, 2 1/4 miles north of their farm. The girls
attended high school at Hazelton, Kansas.
Gladys Utt and Carl Alexander (both from the Hazelton-Kiowa area) were
married in 1930 and moved to the present Alexander farm three miles east
and one south of Hazelton, where their three children were born. Dean,
Shirley and LaDonna all attended grade and high school at Hazelton public
schools and graduated from the same. Carl and Gladys moved to Kiowa upon
their retirement from the farm, and Carl died in 1963. Glayds married
Ralph Adams, a former college chum from Winfield, in 1970; they presently
make their home in Winfield.
Dean married Marilyn Koblitz from Corwin in 1957; they currently operate
the Alexander farm. They have two children, Kelley, a fresman at South
Barber High School, and Steve, a 7th grader in junior high at Hardtner.
Marilyn's interests lie in EHU and helping with the children's 4-H club;
crafts, sewing and cooking bring pleasure and fulfillment to her.
Shirley married Howard Dickson from Dacoma, Oklahoma, in 1955. They met
while both were attending Northwestern State Teachers College, Alva, Oklahoma.
After living a short time in Wichita, Howard joined the U.S. Navy and has
made it his career. He plans to retire in 1980 as a Master Chief; he has
enjoyed serving in several different countries and states. Their three
children, Joy, Mark and Neil, were born in Kansas, the Philippine Islands
and California, respectively. All currently reside in Sunnyvale, California,
with the exception of Joy who lives in Paradise, California. Shirley has
chosen the secretarial field as her career, with interests in church, sewing,
cooking, gardening and stained glass.
LaDonna married Omar Long from Hazelton; they resided in Haysville, Kansas,
where he was employed by Boeing Aircraft Company until his death in 1976.
Their one son, Gregory, lives in Wichita. LaDonna owns and operates a women's
apparel and gift shop in Haysville.
My earliest memories of living and growing up on a farm were those of the
animals and dogs and cats that were a part of our lives. We raised cattle,
chickens and a few pigs. A horse of my own was one of my fondest dreams;
when one finally was given me, I was delighted to be able to ride anywhere
I pleased and spent many hours riding by myself and with friends. I was
also responsible for bringing in from the pasture the milk cow for my father
to milk.
