Louise Bloom Vanderwork

Louise Bloom was born April 8, 1907 on the family farm six miles west of
Medicine Lodge, the third child of the family of John and Nellie Bloom. Her
early life was spent similar to that of a typical farm girl, helping with
the house work, playing ball and riding horses with other girls and boys of
the neighborhood; with time out for piano lessons. Louise attended Doles
Rural School, completing the eighth grade there, afterwards attending high
school at Medicine Lodge graduating with the calss of 1925. Futher education
consisted of two years at Southwestern College at Winfield and additional
Normal Training at Emporia State Teachers College.
After completing college training, Louise was engaged as a rural school
teacher for a period of approximately ten years. All of this time was spent
teaching in the one room rural schools of the county. Her proficiency was
recognized by the County Superintendent who chose her to assist with County
Examinations for eighth grade students and other duties at the County
Superintendent's office during the summer months.
Louise and Glenn Vanderwork were united in marriage in 1937 and were
engaged in farming the Bloom farm for a great many years later moving to
town. One of Louise's joys was flower gardening and traveling especially
summer trips to the mountains. She was a faithful member of the United
Methodist Church and took an active part in the Women's Society serving as
Treasurer of this group for many years. Another great interest was the
Order of Eastern Star being a long time member and a past Worthy Matron.
Louise was especially fond of her nieces and nephews and took a special
interest in and followed their activites closely.
Louise suffered a serioius illness during her later years and died January
     24, 1975 in Medicine Lodge.
