Jack Vandeveer
Jack Bernard Vandeveer came to Barber County April 6, 1932, having been
born in Ashland, Kansas, on March 12, 1932. He attended elementary and
high school in Medicine Lodge graduating with in the class of 1951.
Sandra Lee Schiff was born December 20, 1934, on the farm of her parents,
Mrs. and Mrs. Curtis Schiff, five miles east of Medicine Lodge. She attended
Walstead, a country school, for her elementary schooling and Medicine Lodge
High school, graduating with the class of 1952.
Jack graduated from high school on Tuesday, May 21, 1951, and left Wednesday
May 22, for induction into the United States Air Force. From basic training
he was sent to Sheppard Air Force Base where he was stationed until leaving
for overseas duty in French Morocco, in February, 1954. He returend to the
United States and discharged from the Air Force April 25, 1955.
Jack and Sandy met in high school and were married on June 2, 1953, in
Medicine Lodge while Jack was in the Air Force. They lived in Wichita Falls,
Texas, until Jack was sent overseas when Sandy returned to Medicine Lodge.
She worked in the Extension Office and continued working there after Jack
returned for three years.
After being discharged from the Air Force they moved to the farm of her
grandfather Schiff, now owned by an aunt, Mildred Kimball, where they still
farm and reside.
There are 4 children, all born in the Medicine Lodge Hospital.
Jack Lance, born January 12, 1960, graduated from Sharon High School in
1978 and is presently attending college. His senior year in high school
their football team won the State Championship for 8 Man football in the
State. He also was active in and participated in State meets in track, music,
and speech and was an honor student, graduating third in his class. In his
senior year, he was named by the Wichita Beacon as Player of the Year for
8-Man Football.
Monte Lee was born September 25, 1961, and is currently a junior in
Sharon High Schoo. He played on the Championship Football team, and is
active in all sports, speech and music. When he was 5 1/2 months old he
had to have a tracheotomy and was in critical condition in a Wichita
hospital for 7 days. He remained there for a total of 21 days, cutting
his first tooth during this time.
Stacey Lyn was born February 7, 1967 and is a 6th grader in Sharon Grade
School. She started playing a clarinet last year and is active in sports.
Steffany Kay was born February 12, 1974, and is looking forward to
starting to kindergarten next year.
The family stays busy raising wheat and cattle on the farm. Jack works
off the farm, having worked for the County Highway Department for eight
years and the last few years has done custom work in the summer and fed
cattle for a neighbor in the winter. Sandy enjoys sewing, crafts, gardening
and cooking. Taking in all of the children's school events keeps everyone
on the go.
