Richard Vogel
Lawrence Richard Vogel was born May 27, 1920, in Alfalfa County, Oklahoma
on a farm near Kiowa, Kansas. His parents were Albert and Elizabeth (Gillig)
Vogel.
He attended Friendship Country School in Alfalfa ounty, Oklahoma and Kiowa
grade school and graduated from Kiowa High School in Kiowa, Kansas in 1939.
He received his B.A. degree in Education from Oklahoma A&M College at Still-
water, Oklahoma in 1950.
In 1942 he volunteered in the Navy in the Sea Bees Department. He served
there about 3 1/2 years being stationed at Norfolk, Vifginia; Willimsburg,
Virginia; Gulf Port, Mississippi; Oxnard, California; New Orleans, Louisiana;
Oakland Navy Yard. Overseas duty at Hawaii, Eniwetok, and Tinin. In December
1945 he received his honorable discharge at Norman, Oklahoma.
Lawrence Richard was united in marriage to Jean Loraine Graves at Winfield,
Kansas August 17, 1946 in the home of Rev. C.A. Kitch.
Jean and her twin brother, John LeRoy Graves Jr., were born at the Wichita
Hospital, Wichita, Kansas January 30, 1925. Their parents were John LeRoy
and Luella (DeMott) Graves.
Jean received her education at the Hardtner Grade and High Schools, graduating
in 1943. She attended Wichita Business College, worked at Beech Aircraft
during WWII and at Missouri Pacific Railroad in Wichita, Kansas, returning
to Kiowa, she worked at Tucker Motor Co.
Most of Richard and Jeans lifetime has been spent in the Hardtner and Kiowa,
and Burlington, Oklahoma areas. Their life has been devoted to the soil as
farmers. Richard did teach school and was girls' and boys' basketball coach
at Burlington, Oklahoma for 3 years during the years 1951-52-53.
To this union were born four children: Richard LeRoy Vogel (md. Susan Kay
Schubert) - Barbara Jean (Md. Ron) Sneary - Mary Elaine (Md. Ronald Gene)
Hill - and Albet Jay Vogel.
There are five grandchildren: Eric Steven, Lindsey Kay and Matthew Richard
Vogel; Caleb Jerome Sneary and Jed Madison Hill.
Richard has served on the Board of the O.K. Cooperative Grain and Mercantile
Co., Kiowa and Hardtner, Kansas since 1950. Most of that time he has served
as secretary of the board.
Both Richard and Jean are members of the Kiowa United Methodist Church.
