Jason Wadsworth
Jason Chandler Wadsworth, his wife Adeline (Ellis), with their three
children migrated from Rockford, Illinois, to Barber County, Kansas, in
1879. Here they settled on a farm, a short distance northwest of Medicine
Lodge. The farm was known as the "Wadsworth Homestead."
Jason was born in Hopewell, New York, in 1823. He and his first wife,
Isabel Moore, had two children. The daughter, Flora, married a Wadsworth
(no relation) and lived in Alta, Iowa. She visited the family in Medicine
Lodge many times. Nothing is known of the other child.
Adeline (Ellis) Wadsworth was one of nine children. Only 4 lived to
adulthood. She was born in Canton, Maine. Her father, Benjamin Ellis, was
a man of Herculean build and exceptional physical vigor. In 1856 he and his
family left the ancestral neighborhood in Maine and moved west, settling in
Boone County, Illinois. Here he bought a farm and established a new home.
The four surviving children were as follows: Charles, a lawyer who lived and
practiced in Medicine Lodge; Peres, settled in Reno County, near Hutchinson;
Susan Gilchrist lived in East Aurora, New York; and Adeline, who married
Jason Chandler Wadsworth and moved to Barber County, Kansas.
Jason and Adeline were married in Manchester, Illinois and later moved to
Rockford, Illinois, where their three children, Ben, Laura, and Fred were
born. The family then moved to Barber County, and the three children attended
school in Medicine lodge.
When the children grew up, Ben and his wife, May, lived on the farm with
his parents. Laura, their daughter, was born here; she married Lawson Lindley,
and he had a Real Estate and Abstract business. Their homes were on North
Walnut and South Walnut. After her husband's death, Laura moved to California
to be near some of her family. She later married a Mr. Norman Gilbert. She
died in Santa Ana, California.
Fred was a farmer at heart, but he had to leave the farm because of his
fair complexion that would not stand the Kansas sun and wind. He married
Florence Williams and taught schools near Hardtner and Sharon, living in a
sod house on the Graves farm while teaching at Hardtner. He later was
affiliated with Chase Hardware in Medicine Lodge. He then went into partner-
ship with his brother-in-law, Lawson Lindley, in the Real Estate and Abstract
business. Later, he bought the business from Lindley and remained in this
business until he died. Fred and Florence had four children. They were Virgil
and Albert, deceased; Mildred (Murray) living in Hutchinson; and Louise,
(Bloom) living on a ranch southwest of Medicine Lodge.
Fred Wadsworth was a successful businessman and leader in the community.
A school board member for years. Superintendent of Sunday School at the
Methodist Church for 30 some years, belonging to the Masons and the Lions
Club; a real booster for Medicine Lodge.
Florence gave of her talent, singing in church, lodge, and community
activities most of her life. She had the honor of receiving her 75 year
membership award from the Eastern Star in a ceremony conducted in her
daughter's home (Mrs. Glenn Bloom) just a few months before she died. This
was the first time this award had been given to any Eastern Star member
in Medicine Lodge, and only a very few have been given in the state at that
time.
Among other things, Fred and Florence Wadsworth's beautiful flower garden
will be remembered, from which they both derived a great deal of pleasure.
