George R. Waite, M.D.

Dr. George R. Waite and family moved to Kiowa from Milan, Kansas, in
1910, and built a home at 809 Campbell St. Dr. Waite and Dr. J.S. Fulton
were partners in Kiowa's first hospital, located over the Metz Mercantile
Store, now the Paradise Bowl. After World War I, he and Dr. Fulton disolved
their partnership, and he moved to the 1st National Bank Building, now the
1st State Bank. He continued practice there until the loss of a thumb
caused him to discontinue surgery; then he moved to his residence where
he continued practice until his death, February 28, 1936.
Dr. Waite graduated from Illinois Medical School. He was a member of St.
Marks Episcopal Church of Coldwater, Michigan. In Kiowa the family attended
the Congregational Church, where his daughter, Gracia, was organist many
years. During WWI, he was stationed at San Antonio, Texas, with the Medical
Corps. He was a member of Cosmos Lodge #278, Kiowa; the Mystic Nobles Shrine,
Wichita, and a charter member of the Kiowa Lions Club.
The family recalls the many miles he traveled through all kinds of weather
to deliver a baby or stay with a family in time of sorrow. Some operations
were performed with only a kitchen table and a pot of boiling water to
     substitute for a hospital.
Many a wintry night, a friend went with him on calls to aid in the mud
holes or snow drifts, and even help bring a new life into being. Sometimes
they were treated to a delicioius breakfast. Often bills were paid in produce,
meat, eggs, or labor for services rendered.
Dr. Waite was a music lover; and when the Chautauqua came to Kiowa, he
was usually there. One time an exceptionally good all Hawaiian orchestra
came, he invited them to his home to continue playing. Some time during
the wee hours of the morning, Mrs. Waite cooked a delicious breakfast. It
is not recorded how she 'cooked' the doctor later.
At the end of one Chautauqua Season, an Italian, Arman Pellegrinni, was
persuaded to remain in Kiowa and start violin classes my Dr. Waite and Dr.
     Cowgill, a local Osteopath.
The family enjoyed all holidays; there was an extra plate set at the
table for a guest Dr. Waite was liable to bring home. A special treat
was a breakfast of turkey, gravey, and pancakes the morning after Christmas.
There were three children. Gracia, now Mrs. Art Scripsick, lives in Kiowa.
Robert is married to the former Gracia Salmon Bynum, whose mother, Zetta
Salmon, was one of Fulton and Waite's hospital nurses. They live on the
Lake of the Ozarks, have 2 daughters, and 3 grandchildren. Marjorie, married
to Fred Schupbach, lives in Kiowa, has 2 daughters, Georgiana McMillan,
who lives in Wichita and has 3 children and 6 grandchildren, and Helen, married
to Sam Stranathan. They have 4 children and live in Meeker, Colorado.
Dr. and Mrs. Waite are both buried in Milan, Kansas Cemetery along side
his parents, who came from Coldwater, Michigan, to live with them. Dr.
Waite will be remembered for his kindness and generosity; and his faith in
God carried him through many a difficult time. He always prayed before
performing an operation, saying "There IS and has to be a Higher Power to
     see some people through.
