Montie Homer Ward
Montie Homer Ward, son of William M. Ward and Clara (Clarinda Blankenship)
Ward, was born January 25, 1890, at Belvidere, Kansas. He moved with his
parents and sisters to Sun City in 1892 at the age of two years. He attended
school in Sun City.
He married Minnie Mae Moad, daughter of William Calvin and Sarah (Minerva)
White) Moad, at Lake City, December 28, 1910. She was born September 27,
1890, at Sargent, Missouri. The Moad family moved from Kiowa to Sun City in
1905. Minnie attended NOrmal at Medicine Lodge and taught school near Kiowa
and Hardtner before her marriage.
Montie and Minnie farmed several years west of Sun City on what is known
as the Bud Garten or Dan Cross place. they they farmed southwest of Sun City
in Comanche County before moving to town. Montie was a trucker, owning his
own truck; he hauled livestock to the Wichita markets and freight, salt, and
etc. back to Sun City.
In 1928 he bought the grocery store and meat market from his father, William
Ward, and Harry Hittle. For years he butchered his own cattle and hogs and
sold the fresh meat in the store. The store is still in operation, owned by
their three daughters.
Montie was always active in community affairs. At the age of ten years, he
drove a team and wagon hauling material from Pratt for building the Baptist
Church, helping his father who furnished teams and wagons for this purpose.
He served on the school boards, township board, as Mayor of Sun City, councilman,
and helped organize the businessmen's association for the coon supper, held
to buy signs for the Gyp Hills. R.D. Olmsted and Carl Henson hunted the coon
and Luke Parnell of Arkansas City bar-b-qued the coon. He stayed with Alma
and Buster Hathaway while in town. During Montie's trucking days, he brought
the Chyene Indians from Canton, Oklahoma, to the McLain Rodeo several times.
Minnie was busy raising the family, sewing, canning, making soap, etc.
She worked in the store and was always available when the neighbors needed
help in sickness. Minnie passed away March 2, 1969, and Montie, February 13,
1972.
Five children were born to this union: Adrian Adolph (Bud) was born December
30, 1912. He was a barber in Sun City and Medicine Lodge. He served in WWII
doing overseas duty in Germany and France. Upon his return home he opened
his barber shop in Medicine Lodge which he operated until his death November
26, 1956.
Alma Aline (Sis) married Charles A. (Buster) Hathaway. They opened the
Hathaway's Tavern in Sun City in May, 1946, and are still in business.
A son died in infancy.
Mildred Adelaide (Midge) married Glen LeRoy HOgard. They made Sun City
their home. They are the parents of a daughter, Helen Ann (Annie). She
married Guy Kent Ewing of Hardtner, and they have a son, Jimmie Glen, born
December 30, 1974. They live on the Hogard Ranch near Coats. Glen passed
away March 9, 1973.
Monta Helen married William (Bill) Axtell. They reside in Medicine Lodge
and are the parents of three children, Trudy Jo of Hays; William Mike, who
married Rochelle Roberts of Plains and lives at Meade. Casey Mark attends
school in Lawrence, Kansas.
