Ned Warren

Ned and Jessie (Murphy) Warren were united in marriage September 2, 1939, at Alva,
Oklahoma. Ned is the son of Jay Warren and the late Iva (Axtell) Warren, long time
residents of this community. My parents were Joe and Pearl (Muller) Murphy. My father
came to Medicine Lodge from Illinois as a young man with his father and two sisters,
shortly after the death of my Grandmother Murphy. My mother's parents had traveled
from Wyoming to Seiling, Oklahoma, when she was quite young. They were encouraged to
come to Medicine Lodge by Carrie Nation.
As a child, Ned attended school in Isabel and also rural schools around Medicine
Lodge. Some of omy early years were spent at Lake City and Sun City, where my father
managed Metz Lumber Yards. Those twons were quite lively and friendly communities in
those days. I graduated with the class of '35 from Medicine Lodge High School.
At the time of our marriage, Ned was working for National Gypsum Company. Then
along came World War II and in January, 1943, Ned was inducted into the Army. He
spent one year in the states and two years in Europe. During this time, I spent some
time in Dyersburg, Tennessee, where he was stationed, and worked as a cashier at the
air base. Ned was later transfered to Mobile, Alabama, then overseas. During his
time overseas, I worked for my Aunt Rose Murphy in the Betty Rose Dress Shop.
Upon Ned's return home, he went to work for the Kansas Power and Light Company in
their plant south of town. It was later bought by Skelly Oil Company; and at the time
of his retirement in May of 1977, Getty Oil Company had purchased the plant. Ned chose
to take early retirement due to a back ailment.
Looking back over the years, 1946 must have been one of our busiest years. Our
first child, Robert Dean, was born, we started building our home, and Ned became a
Master Mason that year. He was quite active for a number of years as a Mason and also
in the Chapter. He served as Master of the Lodge and as Excellent High Priest in the
Chapter. We also became members of Eastern Star about this time, an order which I
  enjoyed working in.
In 1952 our daughter, Marilyn Jolene, was born. Both of our children graduated from
Medicine Lodge High School and Emporia State University. At present Jolene is teaching
at El Dorado, Kansas, and Bob is Director of Personnel Services at Wichita State
University. Bob is married to the former Mary Ellen La Berge of Edmonton, Canada, and
Jolene's husband, Harold Stubby, is from Burrton, Kansas. We have three grandchildren,
  Lisa, Becky, and B.J. Warren.
Ned and I are member of the First Christian Church. I have enjoyed my fellowship
over the years with friends in Mother;s Club, Junior Mothers' Club, my church groups,
VFW, Eastern Star, and Self Culture Club.
I have one brother, Dean Murphy, residing in Medicine Lodge. Ned has two brothers
and three sisters living here. He also has four sisters and two brothers living in
  other parts of the country.
Medicine Lodge is a pretty good place to grow up in and raise your children - and
  to grow old in!
