Orron Warren
Cora Edith Springer was born November 7, 1883, to James Wesley and Matilda (Hayden)
Springer of Medicine Lodge, Kansas. She was 3rd of their ten children. Cora attended
the Barber County schools and graduated from Barber County High School. She became
a teacher in the rural schools.
It was one term that she was teaching the Amber District that she met her future
life's companion. She boarded in the James Warren home. Their son, Orron, would slip
down to the school and start the fire, so that by the time the teacher and pupils
arrived, the building was cozy and warm.
Orron was 4th of the eight Warren children. He was born March 31, 1883, and grew
to manhood in Amber Community. His kindness and consideration impressed the young
lady, and on October 1, 1913, Orron and Cora were united in marriage. They made
their home on the Springer Homestead about six miles south of Medicine Lodge, where
Orron farmed; and they were involved in their community affairs. The were members of
the Christian Church.
For a time Orron and cora raised terrier puppies which they sold to a pet shop.
Sunflower School was just south of their home, so they often boarded teachers
during the years. They had no children of their own, but filled their lives with
loving all children. Nieces and nephews were delighted to stay in their home. Many
of the children from the school often spent the night with them. It was a treat for
the children and the Warrens.
Cora and Orron celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary October 1, 1963. Her
health was failing and on July 3, 1964, Cora passed away.
Orron continued farming and remained in their country home, even after leasing
the land. In March, 1977, he could no long live alone, so he decided to make his
home at Kiowa Manor, Kiowa, Kansas, where he could have care.
March 31, 1979, Orron celebrated his 96th birthday with open house in his room
at the Manor. Cake and punch were served to all who stopped by. He is still very
alert and enjoys working jigsaw puzzels and watching TV. He plays bingo and visits
with family and friends. He enjoys and cherishes the many new friends he has made
at Kiowa as well as those who have been a part of his life through the years.
