Jack Warwick
Jack Leslie Warwick was born in Medicine Lodge, Kansas, in 1922. He is
the only son of John William and Beulah (McKaig) Warwick. He lived with
his parents on the farm and attended Blue Ribbon School the first eight
grades. Because of his being the only child, Jack manufactured his own
entertainment by such things as 'canning' a quart of live baby chicks
or pulling a cat around by the tail and saying "I'm plowing," by using
the cat's claws dragging in the soft soil as his plow.
Jack recalls depositing the contents of his piggy bank and losing it
when the bank failed. It finally pad out a small 10% at a time until
87% was paid back. This made a big impression on him.
Jack inherited a lot of mechanical and electrical abilities from his
father and grandfather. Even as a small child he was always busy fixing
things.
He attended Medicine Lodge High School and graduated in 1940. During
high school he was active in FFA, 4-H and music. He held first chair
violin in the high school orchestra.
After high school graduation, he worked at Dickey Appliance and
furthered his interest in electrical wiring etc. He also helped his
father on the ranch. In 1946 he met Vera Irene Moore and a year later
they were married.
Vera Irene Moore was born in 1927 to John H. and Lora (Urton) Moore
on the Crouse place south of Medicine Lodge. She attended Mingona School
all eight years and had the same teacher throughout. Miss Kittie Shmidl.
She graduated from MLHS in 1946 and attended Northwestern State University
in Alva, Oklahoma. In 1947 she taught at Grandview School north of Medicine
Lodge.
Jack and Vera established their home on the Warwick farm, where they
built a small house, and Jack farmed with his father. They had three
daughters. Betty was born in 1948; Kathy, born in 1952; and Mary Jean
born in 1954. Betty married Forrest Parr and is a nurse in Halstead and
has two children, Megan and Jason. Kathy, a Dental Hgienist, is married
to Paul Bird, and they live in Grand Junction, Colorado. mary Jean, a
secretary, married A.J. (Tony) Miller, and they with their son, Jack,
live on the Warwick farm.
During his adult life, Jack made his living on the farm with wheat and
cattle. During winters, he worked at many jobs in and around Medicine
Lodge. He has done plumbing, carpentry, wired houses, and other electrical
chores.
Jack and Vera have been active in community service. They were 4-H
leaders, were active in Union Chapel neighborhood; Jack served as president
of the Rural Fire District, clerk, and presently is trustee of Eagle
township, served on Dry Creek School Board and Union Chapel Church Board.
In 1969 Jack and Vera moved into Medicine Lodge to better care for
Jack's father and currently live there.
