Art Wehling
Art was born in Washington County, Kansas. He moved to Barber County
with his parents in 1907. He attended Cream Valley School for only 3
or 4 years.
Art married Mildred Dotson February 16, 1924. They had one son,
William Robert (Bill) on February 26, 1925.
Art was a farmer all his life, buying a farm in 1934 three and one
half miles south of Isabel, where he planted his 1976 crop. His death
occured on March 10, 1976.
Art and his son, Bill, were going to trade tractors in 1951. They
were working up a deal with Bill Lyman of Lyman Implement Company.
When Bill Lyman came to look at their tractor, Laile, Art's five year
old grandson went with them. Looking the tractor over, Laile offered
the information that something under the tractor was going to fall
off. The tractor deal fell through. Bill Lyman didn't tell Art and
Bill for a year later, possibly saving Laile's hide, at least that day.
Mildred Wehling now lives in Colorado Springs. She taught school at
Cream Valley for two years. She was also a telephone operator in Isabel.
She retired in 1969 after being a cook at the Isabel High School for
ten years.
The Wehlings are the only family to have three generations to graduate
from Isabel High School. Mildred Dotson Wehling was the first in 1921,
Bill Wehling was second in 1943, and Laile was the third in 1964; Lynn
was second of the third generation and the only one in the family to
attend all twelve years at Isabel.
