Arthur G. Weir
Arthur Garfield Weir, born in Merom, Indiana, and Margaret Manetta Clark
(Maggie), born in Harper, Kansas, were married in Harper, Kansas, in 1906
and moved to a farm near Sharon.
Arthur was a barber by profession in his early years and worked in the
gold country of Colorado and in the Dakotas. After living in the Sharon
community for several years they moved to a farm five miles southeast of
Hazelton on the Harper-Barber County line, where they lived for over 50
years. Arthur and Maggie were active in the country Presbyterian Church
southeast of Hazelton and later joined the Kiowa Methodist Church. Arthur
served as a member of the Kings College Country School Board and was a
member of the Hazelton Masonic Lodge. Maggie belonged to a Home Demonstration
Unit.
Four children were born: Lillian (died as an infant in 1913), Billy (died
in 1918), Glenn Arthur, and Nelle Mae. The whole family was active in 4-H
Club work. Even during the Depression the family took trips because Arthur
wanted to see and show the family this great country.
Glenn and Nelle Mae were educated at the rural Kings College School and
the Harzelton schools, with Glenn graduating from Hazelton High School
and Nelle Mae graduating from Kiowa High School. Nelle Mae was graduated
from Salt City Business College, Hutchinson, and Glenn was graduated from
Kansas State University, Manhattan.
Nelle Mae married Thomas John Mangen from Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1945
and two children were born to this marriage, Deborah Lea (Mrs. Clyde Catlin)
and Thomas Gordon. After the death of her husband in 1960, Nelle Mae married
Dale Fankhauser in 1964. She now lives in Anthony. She has five grandchildren,
Shawn and Chelsea Catlin living in Anthony, Kansas; George, Sam and Carrie
Mangen, living in Los Angeles, California.
Glenn and B. Marie Montgomery were married in 1944. After serving in
World War II and completing a college degree, Glenn and Marie moved to the
family farm, and a son, Stan Glenn, was born in 1948. Stan and his wife, Susie,
have two daughters, Stacey Michelle and Lindsay Sutton. Glenn and Marie live
in Arlington, Virginia.
Arthur and Maggie moved to Anthony in 1960 and continued to enjoy their
lifelong interest in softball, basketball, and baseball. They both passed
away in 1969 at the ages of 88 and 86, after almost 63 years of married life,
spent mostly in Barber County.
