Hugo Westphal
My parents lived in Barber County. Uncle Dave Iford, as he was called,
and Mary, his wife, lived north of Medicine Lodge, Kansas.
They then moved 6 miles north of Sharon on our home place. That's
where I was born and raised. Barber County has always been my home.
My husband's parents, Albert and Louise Westphal, moved to Kansas when
he was 9 years old. Since our parents were neighbors, we attended Unity
School.
We grew up, started dating, and were married July 21, 1928. We lived
at Gerlane where our two oldest boys were born - Hugo Jr. and Kenneth.
We lived at Gerlane six years, where we made good friends.
We had four more children after moving to Isabel - Ronald, Danny, Carl,
and Nancy.
Hugo, Jr. lives at Superior, Nebraska and is company manager for Champlin
Terminal. Ronald is manager of the Atlanta, Georgia, city service traffic
coordinator management.
Danny is a Doctor and specialist in pulmonary and internal medicine in
Boca Raton, Florida. Dr. Carl Westphal is serving his country in Hawaii.
He is a psychologist. Our daughter, Nancy, teaches special education and
is married to Dr. Jay Schukman; they live in Great Bend.
Our son Kenneth passed away when he was 9. All of our boys served their
country in different branches of service.
Barber County is our home, and we love it and great state of Kansas. We
celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary in July.
