Herman Edward Wetz, Sr.
Herman Wetz, the youngest son of William and Johanna Wetz, was born in
Harvel, Illinois, April 15, 1890. He attended school in Harvel. He came
to Kansas as a young man to farm some of the land purchased by his father
in Barber County.
Herman an dMyrtle Ray of Kiowa were married, March 27, 1918, in Cherokee,
Oklahoma. To this union were born two sons, Herman Edward, Jr., and Wayne
Wade, and a daughter, Una Mae, who died in infancy. Shortly after the death
of the little girl, they adopted a baby girl, Iris June.
Herman served in the army during World War I, being stationed at Fort
Riley, Kansas.
After the war, Herman returned to Kiowa. He and Myrtle made their home
and raised their family on the farm six miles northwest of Kiowa. They
were members and workers of St. John's United Church of Christ in Hardtner.
Myrtle died November 27, 1965. The following year Herman retired and sold
his farm. He moved to Kiowa to live closer to Herman, Jr., where he lived
until his death, February 19, 1977.
