Albert Henry Wheelock
Albert Henry Wheelock, born February 6, 1866, the fourth son of William
Harrison Wheelock and Caroline Dorst Wheelock. He was born in Hambert,
New York, and attended school there until he was 15 years old.
He came to Marion, Kansas with his father and two brothers, Edward and
William Jr. Here they purchased a ranch, which they operated until 1885.
At this time William Sr. married Lydia. She owned the Elgin Hotel in Marion,
Kansas.
Edward left the ranch and went into the banking business at Watonga,
Oklahoma. William Jr. went to Woodward, Oklahoma where he was engaged in
farming and ranching. Albert Henry also left the ranch at Marion and went
to Pratt County and worked for Elex Simpson. Here, he met and married Carrie
Jane Ewing in 1890, the daughter of Robert and Caroline Simpson Ewing. They
purchased 160 acres- Section 29 twp. 29 S. Range 14 W. Grant twp., Grant
County, Kansas, which was 2 miles west and 1/2 mile south of Coats, Kansas.
Here a daughter, Edna, was born. In 1893 he sold this land and ran in the
Cherokee Strip. He staked a claim two miles south of Hardtner, Kansas. Here,
two more daughters, Vera and Lela, were born.
In 1896 they moved to Barber County, northwest of Hardtner, Kansas, on
the Maloy Place. Here, another daughter, Buelah, was born. In 1897, they
moved back to the claim. Here Grace, Edith, Albert B., Ruth and two more
sons were born. The two sons died at birth.
In 1915, Vera was married to Leslie Tatro, and they moved to the Wheelock
Ranch at Freedom, Oklahoma. In 1915, Albert Henry (Bert) passed away with
typhoid fever at the age of 49 years. Carrie moved to Alva, Oklahoma, with
her seven children and put them in school. Carrie passed away in 1940 at
the age of 73 years.
