Hugh Howard Wheelock and Linda Kay Emmele were both born and raised in
Barber County and have lived most of their lives here.
Hugh, the son of Albert and Eva Wheelock, was born in 1946, at the
Hardtner Memorial Hospital, shortly after his family moved to a farm two
miles west of Medicine Lodge. He attended teh Medicine Lodge Schools and
graduated in 1964. From 1964-1968, he was a student and received his degree
from Kansas State University, majoring in Animal Science. He also was a
member of the K-State Livestock Judging Team his junior and senior years.
Besides his parents, the family consists of two sisters and one brother:

Wheelock. They are all residents of Barber County, living in Medicine
Lodge.

Hardtner Memorial Hospital. She grew up in Kiowa and attended the Kiowa
schools, graduating in 1965. She attended Kansas State Teachers College
at Emporia for three years. The other members of her family include two

Another sister Denise Ann Emmele, died in infancy. Linda's family of Barber
County residents goes back to both sets of grandparents (the S.G. Emmele's
and the W.C. McGee's).
Since their marriage, after living in Germany for about one year, while
Hugh was serving with the United States Army, they have made their home
in Medicine Lodge where Hugh is engaged in farming and ranching on the
Wheelock Ranch. They have six children: Brenda Carole, Russell Tod, Kathleen
Mae, Cheryl Ann, Heather Helen, and Krystal Kay.
