David Wilhite

My roots began in Germany. My father, Henry Sternberger, son of Phillip
and Louise Sternberger, was born in Germany on November 10, 1877, and
came to the United States as a young boy. My mother, Edith Campbell
Sternberger, daughter of Alvert and Lola Grabosch Campbell, was born May
5, 1890 in Putnam County, Missouri. Her grandfather, Charles Grabosch,
was also born in Berlin, Germany in 1941. Her parents were Albert and
Lola Campbell from Unionville, Missouri, and moved to this area when she
was a child. They lived just south of Hardtner in Woods County. My parents
also lived in Woods County, just four miles southwest of Hardtner.
I moved to Barber County to work at the Achenbach Memorial Hospital as
as nurses' aide, when the hospital opened in 1941. On October 19, 1941,
I married David A. Wilhite of Hardtner. David was working for the Phillips
Pipe Line out of Burlington, Kansas, and that was our first home. In July
of 1942, David entered the service, taking his basic training at Ft. Riley,
Kansas. He was then sent to Camp Maxey, near Paris, Texas. A son, Robert
     A. was born to us at Achenbach September 1, 1943, living only one day.
David boarded a ship on December 28, 1943 for overseas duty and I again
worked at the Achenbach Hospital, in the clinic as a doctor's aide.
David landed in Ireland in January, 1944, serving in the European theater
and was in Salzburg, Austria at the war's end. He was with Co. C., 92nd
Signal Btln. He returned to the U.S. in December 1945. We lived in Wichita
a short time, returning to Hardtner to run the Prairie View Hotel, with
his parents, the Herman Wilhites. Our daughter, Jane Sue was born on December
28, 1947. She married Gerald Elwood on July 31, 1966. Janet teaches math
in the South Barber Elementary School in Kiowa. They have one daughter,
Kelli Jolene, born June 23, 1978.
Joyce Annette, born July 8, 1950, graduated from NWOSU with a degree in
music. She married Terry Snow of Freedom, Oklahoma on December 26, 1971.
They have two daughters, Jennifer Anette, born January 8, 1973 and Jaymee
Nicole, born September 8, 1976. They live in Enid, Oklahoma.
Jean Ann born October 13, 1953, married Ivan D. Rose on January 29, 1972.
Daughters Audra Jean, born August 23, 1973 and Anna Lisa Delaine born May
5, 1975. Jean Ann is Activity Director at Achenbach Center. They reside in
     Alva, Oklahoma.
Our fourth daughter, Jill Suzanne, born on July 26, 1957, graduated this
year from NWOSU in Alva with a degree in music. She is presently teaching
at South Barber Schools in Kiowa.
David has worked 21 years for the State of Kansas, in the Port of Entry.
We have also farmed. I am working at the Achenbach Center as Administrative
Assistant. Achenbach Center is now a Rehabilitation Center for the mentally
retarded. We are looking forward to our retirement years, touring the country
     with our camper.
