Dorothy Hull Willis
On January 8, 1949, I was born at the Achenbach Memorial Hospital in
Hardtner, Kansas. The attending physician was Dr. H. Yussada. Given the
name Dorothy Ann Hull, I was the last of five children born to Raymond
and Thelma Hull.
We spent our summers at the farm which is located twenty miles south-
west of Medicine Lodge. During the winter months, we lived in Medicine
Lodge for the purpose of attending school or sending older brothers and
sisters to high school. I attended Medicine Lodge Grade School until the
second semester of the second grad, when my family all moved back to the
farm. I then attended a country school, Julian Dist. #24, about five miles
from our home. Miss Isabelle Byers was my teacher until the fifth grade;
I attended Julian until my eighth grade graduation. (The last year that
school was open there were four children enrolled). Attending high school
in Medicine Lodge, I commuted, since bussing had not been started at that
time; I graduated in May 1967. That fall I moved to Hutchinson, Kansas,
and attended Sidney's Hairdressing College. After graduation in April and
State Board exams in May, I worked in a beauty shop in Pratt; I moved back
to the farm and commuted to Pratt until the end of July.
On August 3, 1968, I married Rodney W. Willis, son of Leroy and Lucille
Willis of Medicine Lodge. Rod was born at St. John, Kansas. His family
moved to Medicine Lodge while he was in grade school. Rod also graduated
from high school in Medicine Lodge, and we both attended the Assembly of
God Church. He then attended Northwestern College at Alva, receiving his
degree in elementary education in 1968. We moved to Garden City, Kansas,
in August 1968, to begin new jobs - Rod beginning his teaching career at
Alta Brown Elementary School, teaching sixth grade; I working at Darner
Beauty Salon, where I worked the next seven years.
In November of 1968, Rod joined the Army Reserve and served in it until
November, 1974.
On March 17, 1972, our first child was born at St. Catherine Hospital
in Garden City, Kansas. We chose the name Deidra Ann for our little girl.
Friday, November 28, 1975, our second child was born and given the name
Emily Diane.
It didn't take long for either of our girls to learn to love our trips
to Barber County, where they loved to visit their grandparents. Deidra
enjoys going on walks, picking wild flowers, and finding an unusual rock.
Our whole family looks forward to the Peace Treaty Pageant, where we can
remember and learn what the beginning was like for the early Barber Countians.
