Dorothy Matthews Wilson
Since my grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. David Clough, were living in Sharon,
Kansas, I was born in their home. My mother, Nora (McKeever) Matthews, and
father, Harry Bertham (Bert) Matthews, and I lived on a farm north of
Gerlane acroos the river on the Newkirk farm. Near neighbors were Mr. and
Mrs. Frank Colborn and their family. North of us were Mr. and Mrs. Lee
McDaniel and their family, Bradshaws, and Brumleys.
I rode horseback with Marjorie Colborn to College Hill school one winter.
Our teacher was Belle Byers.
While living on the Newkirk farm, Dad built a cement chicken house,
making the blocks himself. The upstairs was used for storage place and a
play house for me. My Aunt Rena, Uncle Sheryl, Gladys and Sherlema, who
lived at Hazelton, visited us often. We had lots of fun. We always went to
Medicine Lodge to do our trading. At Trice Store Jack Trice spoiled all the
kids by giving them treats.
Dad played baseball with the Sharon team so, when we went to Sharon, we
all rode in a model T or on a motorcycle which had a side-car.
Later I lived with my grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John McKeever, who lived
four miles south of Sharon. Here I graduated from Sharon High School in 1930.
In 1931 I married Ray Wilson of Attica. We have three daughters: LaRay
Ann Duvall, Jane Collins, and Nora May Collier. I have eight grandchildren.
After Ray's death, I moved to Harper to be near by daughter Jane. She and
her husband operate the Ponderosa Floral and Greenhouse.
