Claude Winborne

I was born Dec. 10, 1932, at the home of my grandparents, Jim and Carrie
Cavin, in Sawyer, Kansas, with Dr. Gilbert attending.
I grew up with my parents, Alvin and May (Cook) Cavin, a sister, Alvena
May (Mrs. Clifford McCullough-Clearwater) and a brother, Farrel Dean (Boise,
Ind.), on farms near Isabel and Norwich, Kansas.
My grandfather ran the Farmer's Elevator in Sawyer. Christmas there with
all the Cavin family was very special. Favorite teachers were Edna Eckell,
  Edna Housse, and Darlene Rickard.
At age 8, in a revival conducted by Uncle D.A. Cavin at Hazelton, I
accepted Christ. I was baptized in the Bible Baptist Church, El Reno, Okla.,
where Uncle D.A. was pastor. We had no Baptist Church in Isabel. Grandma
Cavin and I joined First Baptist Church in Medicine Lodge in 1944. This faith
has been the guidepoint for my parents, us children, and my own family. I'm
so very thankful for Christian parents who took me to church as a child.
My childhood desire to become a nurse and work the 'baby floor' was nurtured
by visits to Nashville Hospital. I saw Mrs. Estella McCarty, wife of the late
Dr. D.C. McCarty, and later Mrs. Frances Waylon, wife of Dr. T.L. Waylon, in
  nurses' uniform at work.
After MLHS graduation - May 25, 1950 - my dream began to come true, for on
July 1, 1950, I entered St. Joseph School of Nursing, Ponca City, Okla.
Director of Nurses, Sr. Mary Marcellene R.N., assured me nurses were born -
not made, and although tuition money was not available ($125) I would pay
  when my training was completed.
June, 1953, at Joslin Hospital, Harper, Kansas, I began work as a graduate
nurse (@$220). The last of July I learned I had passed State Board. At last
  I was a real R.N.!
I came to Medicine Lodge and worked for $240 from Sept-Nov., then joined
my parents in Sterline, Colo., in 1953. Mother wrote about a young fellow
working on the oil rig with Dad. Jokinly, I told a girlfriend, "I believe I'll
go to Colorado and marry the fellow" - after all, I was 22 and nearly and old
  maid!
About a year later - Nov. 20, 1954 - in Calvary Baptist Church, Sterling,
Colo., I married Claude Winborne Jr., from Winnsboro, La., with Rev. Everett
Cavin officiating. Attendants were Claude's brother, Johnny, and my sister,
Alvena McCullough. Claude spent a year in Korea, but he lived with his mother,
Ethel, and her husband, Terry Cruse, and worked for Terry.
James Cavin Winborn, a 7lb. 9 0z. baby boy, blessed our home on Sept 3,
1956. In 1958 we returned to Kansas, where I worked at Medicine Lodge Hospital.
Claude Dell Winborne III joined our family July 11, 1960. In 1974 Jim married
Shirley Stone. Our pride and joy is thier daughter, Heather Renee, age 2 1/2.
With exception of 10 months at Ness City, we remained in Medicine Lodge.
Claude (Cajun) worked in the oil patch several years, but is now employed by
Wright Bros. Skelly Truck Stop. I'm still iving out my dream, making ill
people comfortable at Medicine Lodge Hospital. I enjoy the delivery room
because when a newborn baby cires - you feel another miracle of god has been
made possible. To see the radiance of Mother and Daddy when they see their
beautiful baby is the ultimate compensation for a chosen professional dream.
