Philo D. Wooddell
Philo D. Wooddell and his wife, the former Jean Glenn, with their children,
Glenn age 7, and Ann Elise, age 15 mo., moved to Kiowa in January, 1949.
Following military service. Philo had completed the degree in Business
Administration at Southwestern College, where Jean was a Music Performance
major. He was the new manager for the Kiowa Food Store and Credit Union,
which under his guiding hand grew during the next decade to be Kiowa's
first big supermarket. Jean taught flute and piano in the home and at
various periods in Anthony, Hazelton, and Kiowa schools.
Glenn and Ann attended the Kiowa schools, which were known to be strong
in every way, particularyly in music. There was a full orchestra, an excellant
band, and a fine vocal department. Glenn and Ann were enthusiastic participants
in music and drama with such talented teahcers as Gary Fletcher, Gordon Corwin,
Joe Howard, Mr. Brefel, and principals Richard Lee and Gene Watkins to lead
them. Involvement in the Methodist Church also enhanced the family's life.
Covered dish suppers, good music, spiritual growth, fun and fellowship were
all meaningful experiences long to be remembered. Sharing in the celebration
of the building and dedication of the new church was a privilege.
In October, 1957, second daughter Nancy Lyle was born. With three children
of such diverse ages and interests, there was never a dull moment. Always
there were warm, caring friends and neighbors to share joys as well as any
troubles and to lend a helping hand. The family delighted in any outdoor
recreation, and camping in Colorado became a favorite family activity which
is still enjoyed.
In 1961 Philo became Purchaser for the Winfield State Hospital so the
family returned to Winfield, where Glenn was already about to graduate from
Southwestern. AFter receiving his degree in music, he continued graduate work
at North Texas University, then accepted a teaching position in Jeffersonville,
New York, where he remains. Ann did special work in Montessori Education at
St. Nicholas school in London, England, following her college work and is
now in Lawrence, Kansas, where her husband, Dr. Stephan Anderson, is on the
music faculty at Kansas University. Ann assists with the program for gifted
children in the Lawrence schools. They have one son, Erick, age 9. Nancy is
married to Bill Maier and both are Bus. Admin. majors at Emporia State. They
have one son, Bryan, age 2, and reside in Wichita. The Wooddell family consider
the years spent in Kiowa, Barber County, a very special part of their lives
and will cherish the friendships they made forever.
