Dan Woodward
On March 31, 1925, Dan Henry Woodward was born, the eleventh child of
Darius Vernon (Rye) Woodward and May Axtell, at the old home place on
Medicine Boulevard. Dr. Gilbert was doubtful he would live - he was so
scrawny - and looked like a little old man; however, we thought he was
beautiful! No baby was more loved. 1925 was a year for little boys in
the family - Tommy Warren, Billy Axtell, Dan and Gilbert Woodward.
At the age of four Dan cut holes in the knees of his new overalls.
Mamma was really exasperated - Why? His answer was, "So I could have
patches like Vernon and Bill! He named his doll "Danny Don't" - with
so many people bossing him, he thought that was his name.
On May 4, 1928, Joyce, was born, and Dan became "Big Brother." Miss
Callie Mills was his kindergarten teacher in the old school building,
where Mom and Dad had also attended school. While in junior high he
played the trumpet in the band. In 1938 Mamma, Daddy , Dan, Joyce and
AyeSir (their cocker spaniel dog) became gypsies for awhile going to
Hot Springs, New Mexico, for Dad's health. They went to Alice, Texas,
and on to Richmond, California. Much to our delight Dad, Momma, Dan,
Joyce, Deloris, Carol, AyeSir, and myself - all in a V8 Ford - left
California February 1, 1939, for Medicine Lodge, Kansas (HOME). After
wading in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, the Rio Grande River, and
the Pacific Ocean, seeing the mountains and the White Sands and crossing
the desert twice, we arrived home on February 10. The sight of the school
and courthouse steeples, the Gyp Hills, the Medicine River, and Elm Creek
was never more welcome. The folks bought a home on North Main Street,
and Dan worked at the Index office as "Printer's Devil." Our happiness was
short lived, as Momma died July 19, 1940; Pearl Harbor tragedy December 7,
1941, and Dad died January 7, 1942, at the Veteran's Hospital in Wichita.
Dan joined the Navy May, 1942, and was on the USS Reno when they were
bombed by the Japs, and surprisingly survived.
Thanksgiving Day of 1945 was really "Thanks to God Day" for us. Edith,
Florence, Vernon, Bill, Dan, Joyce, and I were all at Edith's home in
Medicine Lodge, and Ethel's family were all well at Emporia. The boys were
home from the war safe!!!
Dan and Lauretta Louthan, daughter of Oliver and Edith Louthan, were
married November 28, 1945. Lauretta said later, "Some girls get a mother-in-
law, but not I; I have four - Dan's four older sisters!!" JoNeve Gayle was
born at Woodward, Oklahoma, December 7, 1946. She is Mrs. David Hansen and
has two sons, Nicholas and Daniel. They live in East Moline, Illinois. After
to Denver, Colorado, Dan and Lauretta both worked, and he attended Denver
University earning his Bachelor and Master's degree in psychology. Their
son, Dan, was born in 1948; and after living in an incubator for three
months, he died. They brought him home for burial at the Highland Cemetery
beside my baby. On October 12, 1949, Florence Ellen was born. She is Mrs.
Ellan Randolph, has a son, Ben, and lives in East Moline, Illinois. Danita
Eileen was born January 19, 1953, at Arkansas City, Kansas. She is Mrs. David
Huenneker, has two children, David and Jessica, and lives at Fenton, Illinois.
Their son, Axtell Louthan, was born at Pratt, Kansas, June 1, 1959. He lives
at East Moiline, Illinois, and is employed by John Deere. Axtell Louthan
Woodward and William Vernon Woodward, son of Darius Vernon and Leona Ricke
Woodward, will carry on the Woodward name for (Rye) D.V. Woodward and May
Axtell. Lauretta is now Lauretta Engle and lives at East Moline, Illinois.
Dan and Norma Walcher, daughter of Hans and Alma Walcher, were married in
1969 and live at Davenport, Iowa. They are authors of a book "Living Around
The Now Child." Dan is employed as Educational and Clinical Psychologist for
the Rock Island Public Schools and has his private practive in Moline, Illinois.
