Vic Youngers
Vic Youngers was born at Hospers, Iowa. At an early age he and his family
moved to Willowdale, Kansas. After nine years in government service, Vic
moved to Medicine Lodge in January 1935, and opened an automobile agency for
Dodge, Plymouth and Packard cars.
Gladys Spencer Youngers came to Medicine Lodge from Dumas, Texas, in July
1938. She opened the Brooks Spencer Dry Goods Company with the help of her
sister and brother-in-law (Louise and Louis Brooks)
The first time Vic and Gladys met was rather amusing. Gladys was making a
business call in the Hibbard Drug Store, next door, when George Hibbard
introduced them. Vic was not satisfied with the short introduction, so he
came into her store on the pretext of buying a tie. He managed to occupy a
lot of Gladys' time. Coutship followed and they were married in 1940. After
marriage the two continued their separate business ventures. Gladys found
time to give birth and hlep raise two children, James Louis and Diane Kay.
Both children graduated from Medicine Lodge High School and Kansas State
University. Louis received his BS degree in business administration and is
now Vice President of Currie Real Estate Company, Kansas City, Missouri,
where he manages the North Antioch Shopping Center. He has three boys, ages
five, seven and eleven. Diane Youngers Hicks received her BS degree and
Master's degrees in home economics and is now teaching at Northwestern
Missouri State University, Maryville, Missouri.
During all these years, the two family business ventures continued to
prosper. In the meantime Vic added farm machinery and Behlen steel buildings
to his lines of merchandise. In 1963 he sold his auto and implement business
to Bronson Motor Company, retaining his agency for Behlen steel buildings; he
is still active in a limited way in this sales work. Vic has always been
active in his church.
Gladys, with the help of many wonderful employees, has maintained a
modern, up-to-date department store. She still enjoys being active in its
operation. She has been very active in her church, community activities, 4-H
work and many clubs. One of her greatest joys has been her sponsorship of
Iota Beta Sorority.
We became landowners when we acquired the old Newton ranch. Our friend and
neighbor, Joe Gant, told us that a mile or two of our north fence line was
built along the old Gyp Hills Trail to Hardtner instead of section lines
because of the rough terrain. One of the old wooden bridges on the ranch was
still servicable when we bought the ranch.
The last several years we have been fortunate enough to be able to make
several wonderful trips to: Old Mexico; many European countries including
Spain, England, the Scandinavian nations, Italy, France; and Alaska, as well
as most of our other states.
And so - the eligible bachelor of Kansas and the young miss from Texas have
had a wonderful life in Medicine Lodge and Barber County, and this is still our
favorite part of the world. Vic Youngers died December 27, 1979.
