John Shellenberger


       Susannah Storey homesteaded the 160 acres in southwest Harper County in
     1883, where she and her future husband, William Shellenberger, were to
     rear their family.
       Samuel and Mary Crow lived a mile and a half from them with their three
     children.
       John, the third child of Susie and Will, was born i 1889. Mabel, the
     only daughter of Sam and Mary, was born in 1890. The Crow and Shellenberger
     children attended Banner School.
       Mabel and John were married in Wichita in 1910. They made their home on
     the Crow farm. Their household goods wasa hayrack load of furniture purchased
     for $25.00. Mabel's parents gave her a milk cow named Pansy; she produced
     seven heifers, each was given a flower name, the last one was Seven Sisters.
       John and Mabel were dedicated members of the Corwin Presbyterian Church.
     Alma was born in 1913, Margaret in 1918. They moved to a farm near Isabel
     in Barber County in 1925. Pearl was born in 1926. John helped build the
     dam at 99 Springs Resort, along with other farmers, using teams and wheel
     scrapers. Margaret and Alma attended Isabel Consolidated School, with Alma
     graduating in 1931.
       The family spent a year in Greeley County at the beginning of the "Dust
     Bowl" period. They returned to Barbar County, sadder but wiser, and with
     a determination to overcome obstcles. They moved to Harper County in the
     mid '30's, to the farm that was John's birthplace. Margaret graduated from
     Medicine Lodge High School in 1938, and Pearl received her diploma from
     Kiowa High School in 1944.
       Mabel passed away in 1952 and was laid to rest in Rose Hill Cemetery
     near Hazelton in Barber County. Mabel was a devoted wife and mother and a 
     good community and church worker.
       A mutual friend introduced John and a lovely lady, Ruth Cornick. They 
     were married in 1954. Both enjoyed traveling and spent some time in England
     visiting John's daughter, Pearl and her husband, Andrew Chamlee, who was
     in the U.S. Air Force. They visited frequently in the Rio Grande Valley in
     Texas, where they owned land. Ruth was a wonderful friend to John's grown
     daughters and a loyal wife to him. She passed away in 1975 after eight years
     of poor health and broken bones. She was buried beside her first husband in
     Anthony. John continued to live on the farm until he collapsed with a broken
     hip. He passed away i 1976 at the age of 87 years and was buried in Rose
     Hill Cemetery.
       John and Mabel's daughter, Alma, married Alva Jester. They reside in
     Barber County, and are the present owners of the land Alma's grandmother
     and great grandparents homesteaded in Harper County.
       Margaret married Ralph Adkins. They live on an acreage near Okawville,
     Illinois. He has helped supervise the building of several major highways
     in that area.
       Pearl's first husband died. She is now married to Stanley Harlow. They
     live near Cheyenne, Wyoming, where Pearl works in an accounting office
     at the airbase.
       John and Mabel had three grandchildren and ine great grandchildren. He
     lived a full life and enjoyed livestock an growing crops. He often helped
     those less fortunate.
