Kittie Shmidl


       Kittie was born March 27, 1892, to Vincent and Josephine Doupnik Shmidl.
     Josephine came to America with her parents by boat from Bohemia. The family
     moved from Chase County, Kansas, to Barber County in a covered wagon in 1908.
       There were eight children born in this family: Anna married Floyd Gardner,
     Bohoney married Forrest McCracken, Joe, Ed, Albert, Kittie and Mary and
     Tressie who died in infancy. Only two of the children are still living.
     Albert lives in Hutchinson and Kittie resides in Kiowa Manor, Kiowa, Kansas.
       Kittie began her teaching career in 1910 in a country school two miles
     east of Sawyer, Kansas. She taught the following schools: College Hill,
     Croft, Mingona, Forest City, Sun City and Deerhead. She retired in 1957
     but did some substitute teaching in Sun City after retirement.
       She maintained her home in Sun City which she shared with her brother,
     Ed, until his death in 1971. In 1972 she bought a home in Medicine Lodge
     and lived ther euntil she suffered a severe stroke in 1977. Following a
     long stay in the hospital, she became a resident of Kiowa Manor.
       Kittie's nephew, Forrest Schmidl and his wife, Alta, live in Medicine
     Lodge.
