Earl Eldon Armstrong
Earl Eldon Armstrong, son of Christopher and Elizabeth Jane (Thompson)
Armstrong, was born October 21, 1905, on the family farm east of Isabel, in
a granary, because the house was not finished. He had two brothers and two
sisters: Ross, Viola, Morton and Zelma. Earl attended Waverland Grade school.
This school consolidated with the Isabel School at the time of Earl's
eighth year. He graduated from Isabel High School in 1925. He played on the
High School football team. Earl was never able to start to school in September
because he had to wait until the wheat was planted.
Earl started farming on his own in 1927. When the work was done in the
fall he would go to Illinois, where he had many relatives, and help pick corn.
On one of those trips he met Marie Fetters, daughter of Top and Eunice (Swartout)
Fetters, of Reynolds, Illinois.
They were married on January 17, 1929, in Milan, Illinois. It was a cold,
snowy day. Earl's parents moved to a farm a couple of miles east and Earl and
his new bride took over the family farm.
Earl and Marie spent many evenings visiting friends and neighbors. They
were busy with school activities when their children were in school, and hardly
ever missed a ball game. They were both active in Odd Fellows, Rebekah, Mason
and Eastern Star Lodges. They are members of the Isabel Methodist Church. Earl
is a trustee on the board and a charter member of the Methodist Men.
When the children were grown, Earl drove the school bus for a number of
years. He enjoyed the children. Marie worked for Davies Manufacturing in Pratt,
and she enjoyed this change of pace.
Earl and Marie had six children: Darlene, Donald, Eunice, Kenneth, Jim and
Pat. They all graduated from Isabel HIgh School. The boys were athletically
inclined and participated in all sports. They have 14 grandchildren and 12 great-
grandchildren.
Marie passed away July 11, 1985. Earl still lives on the home place and
continues to farm. He is still involved in community activities and with his
family and friends.
