Nettie, daughter of Luther and Mahala White, and her husband Dick
Bailey came to Kansas with her parents and brothers, Lester and Layton
White in 1884. They took the claim across east from Lester. Dick was
treasurer of the first school board and president of the literary society
which met at the school. Very tall locust trees were the landmark near
their corner blooming for many springs and offering shade as children
walked to school with books and tin lunch pails.
A tragedy of the times was the death of Nettie (White) Bailey who
was killed by lightning on a harvest day in July 1889. She left 2 small
daughters Mabel Bailey Philp and Blanche (Bailey) Peterie. Living 10th
generation decendants are: Alan Bailey Philp, Fanelle (Peterie) Lampkins,
Edith (Peterie) Hoyt, Claudine (Peterie) Raleigh, William Gerald Peterie.
