Pearl Runkle Battin
I was born on a farm southeast of Isabel in 1904. I had a brother
Everett born two years later. My folks moved to town a few years later.
My dad, John Runkle, built the brick building on the east side of the
street for a hardware. He sold furniture, implements and Ford cars from
this place. He also built the first house across the tracks on the east
side of the street.
I graduated from grade school when I was twelve years old at Isabel.
I remember two teachers Bertha Nossaman and Herman Wells. We moved to
Meade. I was sixteen. My twon brothers James and Leonard were born there.
Both my grandparents lived in Isabel: Susan and Daniel Runkle also
Martha and Fred Huitt. They are buried in Isabel cemetery. Also my folks
Ida and John Runkle are buried there along with aunts and uncles.
