Oliver Bell
Remembering the total of 30 years spent in the Isabel community, brings
back many happy memories to Wilma Austin Bell. She was born April 12, 1920,
the only child of Will D. and Margaret Austin, growing up on the farm between
Isabel and Nashville. It was a unique time; neighbors neighbored and friends
were important. She remembers The Great Depression (it wasn't all that
great!). Seven loaves of bread cost 25 cents at Double O Grocery. Wilma's
grade school graduation dress cost $1.98. She graduated from Isabel High
School in 1938 with the largest class (20) to that date. She was a charter
member of B-Square 4-H Club.
Wilma attended Sterling College, Pratt Junior, and graduated from North-
western State at Alva. She taught 1 year at Eldred and 6 years at Eagle School.
In 1959 she married Ollie Bell and moved to a ranch 5 miles west of
Union Chapel with life revolving around "the little Chapel on the hill."
Ollie was born June 15, 1912 near Afton, Oklahoma, the 5th of 12 children
of Frank and Maude (Angell) Bell. They moved to Eagle Township in 1920. He
attended Eagle School and graduated from Medicine Lodge High School in 1931.
He played guard on the undefeated 1930 football team. After working for
Barbara Oil Co., and KPL he was inducted into the army in 1942 and received an
honorable discharge in 1943. He was Treasurer of Eagle Township Board 13 years
and served on the Union Chapel Board 38 years. Wilma is involved with Ladies
Aid, Sunday School, and Bible Study at the Chapel. She belongs to Flying
Eagle Unit and was a 4-H leader. In April of 1986 Ollie and Wilma moved to
Medicine Lodge.
Their son, Will lives on the ranch. He was married March 15, 1986 to
Deb Noftsger of Des MOines, Iowa.
Harold married Nancy Edwards of Wichita December 31, 1983. They live at
Marquette, Kansas and he pastors the United Methodist Church there and also at
Windom.
Glenda married Robert Singer, son of Kenneth and Peggy Singer, July 1,
1967. He is associated with Consolidated Rebuilders of Hutchinson. Their
daughter, Jennifer, was born January 8, 1972.
The family considers it a blessing to have roots growing deep in the
Isabel area.
