Douglas (Tap) Bolt was born to Fred and Hilda Bolt at their farm six
miles north of Isabel on March 2, 1939. He attended both grade and high
school at Isabel, graduating in 1957. He then enrolled at Kansas State
University, graduating in 1961 with a major in animal husbandry. He returned
to the family farm for one year after college, but either the excitement
of learning or the diffifculty and hard work of farming caused him to return
to Manhattan to begin graduate school. The goal of his graduate program and
much of his professional career since has been to learn as much as he could
about animal physiology and to use that knowledge to improve the efficiency
of the reproductive processes in farm animals. In 1967 he entered a post
doctoral program in the obstetrics and bynecology department at the University
of Missouri in Columbia. He wanted to work in an institution where he could
learn about the physiology and endocrinology of human reproduction and
possibly make himself more saleable in the research community. Although the
work at a medical school was exciting and challenging, he was pleased that the
opportunity to continue research on animals presented itself in 1968 when
he was offered a position at the USDA Agricultural Research Center in Beltsville,
Maryland. He has worked there ever since and welcomes his friends to call
and visit the station. In addition to providing an exciting research situarion,
the jov has enabled Douglas and his wife to travel about this country and to
many interesting foreign countries, including China, India, Pakistan and several
     European countries.
Douglas married Ann McElfresh from Satanta, Kansas in 1962. In 1969 they
adopted a daughter, Stephanie (born January 30, 1969). The marriage ended in
     divorce in 1972.
Douglas married Marie Allgood in Kinston, North Carolina in 1975. Douglas,
Marie, and Marie's daughter Beth (born February 25, 1969) reside in Beltsville,
     Maryland.
