L.D. Byrd
L.D. Byrd was born in Cartersville, Oklahoma, November 28, 1902. In the
early 1920's he came to Isabel and married Marie Releford (born April 27, 1906)
on August 20, 1924. At that time he was a section hand on the railroad. Eventually
he went to work at Pickering's Service Station, where he learned to be a
mechanic and a machinist.
In the first year of thier marriage, L.D. went to Oklahoma and brought
his two young sisters whose mother had died. Josie Belle Byrd eventually
went to live with John and Jennie Blackwelder at Montezuma. She became a
school teacher, married Leo Klotz, and settled down in Meade, Kansas. They
had one son David, who lives with his wife and two daughters in Tacoma,
Washington. Bessie continued to live in Isabel and married Walter Kruckenberg.
Marie and L.D. had six children. Their oldest daughter Evelyn Joyce,
born December 26, 1925, died as a baby. E.L. was born January 2, 1927; he
now lives in Wichita. Lorena born March 22, 1929, married Frank Van Horn and
had one son. She too now lives in Wichita. Bobby, born February 24, 1931, is
married and has five children. He now lives in Shawnee Mission. Donnie, born
December 17, 1933, has two children. He now lives in Concord, California.
Their youngest Darlene was born January 18, 1936. She has four children and
now lives in Wichita.
In 1939 L.D. moved his family to Wichita where he worked as a machinist
at Cessna until 1945. At that time he returned to Isabel and had his own
mechanic and machinist shop. In 1949 he returned to Wichita to work for
Cessna until he died June 14, 1959. Last spring Marie celebrated her eightieth
birthday. She lives in Wichita with her daughter Lorena.
