William Alvin Cavin
Alvin is the oldest child of 6 born to Jim and Carrie (Hoyt) Cavin.
Alvin, in 1907 moved with his parents to a farm 4 miles south and 1 mile
east where he grew to manhood, attending the Eldred rural school grades
1-8 and then graduating from Isabel High School in 1924. As a child he
attended the Isabel Methodist Church.
May was born at Pretty Prairie, Kansas and attended school in
Cunningham and Sawyer as her father owned telephone exchange offices there.
She worked as a telephone operator in Sawyer and met Alvin, sent him a
valentine in February 1926 and this sparked the romance. They were married
August 29, 1926. They married at High Noon at Sawyer Christian Church by
Rev. Claude Large. They "honeymooned" at the Pratt Fish Hatchery and on
home to the "chores" that evening. They lived on the "Wohlford place" south
of Isabel from 1926-33 when Depression days came and the farm sold so the
next several years were spent trucking and farming. The family by then
consisted of children: Alvena May born 1928, Dean in 1930 and Gretta Faye
in 1932. They moved from the Isabel community in 1943. Alvin continues to
do banking business there, however, even today. They followed the oil field
till the early part of 1963 when they settled in Medicine Lodge where Alvin
was employed by the City and May a nurse's aide at the Medicine Lodge Hospital.
May went home to Heaven after a 10 year illness of Alzheimers Disease November
1986. Alvin cared for her faithfully during that time, even after she had
to be taken to the nursing home as he went three and four times a day to
feed and be with her. Alvin celebrated hi 82nd birthday January 1987. He
goes even now to volunteer his services to help and brighten the resident's
days there. Alvin's children: Alvena (Mrs. Clifford McCullough) lives in
Clearwater, Kansas and is a professional cake decorator; Dean is pastor of
Faith Baptist Church, Attica, Kansas; Gretta (Mrs. Claude Winborne) is a
registered nurse, living at Medicine Lodge, Kansas. Alvin and May had 7
grandchildren and have 12 great grandchildren. A Home built on Christian
principles and God has been given to this family.
