Frank Chain
Frank Chain was born in Pike County, Ohio in 1871. His father, John M.
Chain and wife Emily Ware Chain heard of the tall prairie grass country in
Kansas.
John M. Chain, his wife and four sons John, Frank, Oscar and Alfred
came on the emigrant train. John M. Chain bought land five miles southwest
of Haven, Kansas. Here was where the rest of the family was born.
On January 24, 1906, Frank and Bessie May Henderson were married. Bessie
was born in a sod house in western Kansas on May 23, 1897. Frank and Bessie
had four children, Iona, Aline, George and Lorin. In 1918 Frank Chain came
to Barber County to look for good grass land. He rode horseback through
Barber County in 1893 when he made the Cherokee Strip Run.
Frank bought the Kemp ranch November 7, 1918 and moved to Barber County
in the spring of 1919. The ranch has been owned by the family for seventy
years.
Iona Chain married Mike Stephenson in 1930. In 1935 they moved to the
Chain Ranch in Barber County. Mike and Iona bought the Hybsha ranch, built
a new house and moved on the ranch in 1950. Mide died in 1974. Iona married
Thell Nodland in 1983. They continue to live on the ranch.
Hillman Cargill rented the Greenleaf Ranch in 1938. He and Aaron Greenleaf
went into partnership and bought Billy Hawkins registered cows. Aline Chain
finished teaching that term of school, and she and Hillman Cargill were
married July 3, 1938. They lived on the Greenleaf ranch several years. Dovie
was born January 24, 1940. A place near Sharon was bought; Hillman and Aline
moved there. In 1942 LaDene was born at Hardtner, Kansas while living there.
The Bently place was purchased south of Isabel, Kansas. Colin was born here
in 1944 and continues to care for the land since Hillman's death on January
21, 1979.
Colin married Ann Smith from Ryan, Oklahoma on March 6, 1968. They also
live on the home place. They have one son, Chad. Dovie married Edgar House
October 13, 1962. Their son, Tyson was born September 7, 1970. Edgar died
January 27, 1978. Dovie later married Ray Martin. Ray has two children who
are both grown. LaDene married Stan Blankenship. She has two sons, Ky and Jay.
