Carl Milford Corrie
In the year 1881, on September 26, Carl Milford Corrie was born near
Bridgeport, Illinois in Lawrence County, to Thomas Newton Corrie and Nancy
Miranda (edmondson) Corrie. In 1886, along with his brothers Edgar, Roy
and Ezra and sister Grace, Carl came to Medicine Lodge, Kansas. Two years
later, Thomas moved his family, which now included youngest son John Frank,
to a farm one and one-half miles east of Isabel, Kansas. It was here that
Carl grew tall and strong. He worked in the fields and on the farm and
attended grade school nearby. Along with his family, he attended church
every Sunday and grew to know his God intimately. He was one of the three
Corrie sons who decided to become a minister. Carl finished his undergraduate
studies at Northwestern University Academy in Evanston, Illinois and then
attended nearby Garret Biblical (Methodist) Seminary. While in Garret, Carl
met Florence Mae Dragoo, who was studying music at Northwestern University.
Carl graduated in 1907 and married Mae on September 4, 1907 in her home in
Murdock, Illinois.
The two traveled by train to Talmo, Kansas, where they began their
ministry in a newly organized Methodist Episcopal mission church. Subsequent
charges were in Illinois and in Iowa. While in Collison, Illinois, their
first child, Mary Ruth, was born on October 10, 1913. Evelyn Mae was born
July 31, 1919 in Springfield, Illinois.
Carl always had the love of the land and his pioneer background in his
life. He was offered a large city church which he declined for he felt his
concern and compassion lay with the people he had always known in rural
communities. His wife Mae continued her work with music all through their
life in the church.
Daughter Ruth was a teacher and married farmer Oliver U. Bricker and
had one son, Larry Lynn Bricker. Oliver died January 7, 1962. Ruth married
Dr. Paul Gerhardt.
Daughter Evelyn married Robert Birkby. Their family includes Dulcie
Jean, Robert Corrie, Jeffrey Lawrence, and Craig Steven.
Carl Milford Corrie died on February 1, 1942. He is buried in Rose Hill
cemetery in Shenandoah, Iowa. His wife, Mae, died March 24, 1972 and is buried
beside her husband.
