Grace Corrie Doner
Grace Corrie, the only daughter of Thomas and Nancy Corrie, was born
October 28, 1878 near Sumner, Lawrence County, Illinois. In 1886 she came
to Mingona, Kansas with her parents and four brothers, Edgar, Roy, Ezra
and Carl. Shortly after arrival the fifth brother, Frank, was born. In 1888
they moved 1 mile east of Isbel where they farmed, raised cattle, hogs,
chickens and a large family garden. All the children attended school there
and furthered their education elsewhere. Grace attended Southwestern College
and taught school several years. Three brothers became Methodist ministers.
On March 13, 1908 Grace homesteaded in Baca County, Colorado. In August
she returned by covered wagon to occupy the land, located about 15 miles
north of Stonington or now 2 miles east of Bartlet and one mile south of
Highway 160. She proved up her claim and helped her father improve his.
Besides the attraction of "Pretty Prairie" there was a second attraction
"Bachelors Row" which housed 13 eligibles, some from Isabel and other places.
Among them was Oliver Doner whom she married on June 2, 1915. Three children
were born to them: Walter Newton on May 21, 1916, William Glenn February 12,
1918, and Olivia Louise April 23, 1920. All attended "Pretty Prairie" school
until it consolidated with Walsh; there they finished high school.
Oliver passed away in 1938. Walter married and lives on the Doner home
place. Glenn now lives in Walsh. Grace moved into Walsh in 1952 and enjoyed
her home, friends, family and church until she wasn't able to live alone.
She then spent time with each of her children. She was with her daughter
Olivia in Battle Ground, Washington, at the time of her death on October 5,
1967. She was returned to Colorado and is buried beside her husband Oliver
and near her parents Thomas and Nancy Corrie in the Minneapolis Cemetery
nine miles north of Walsh.
