Dale Ellis
Dale Daniel Ellis, son of Earnest and Elnora Ellis, was born in Pulaski,
Iowa on September 16, 1904.
Dale came to Isabel with his parents at the age of six years. He was
the oldest in a family of six sisters and one brother. He attended the
Isabel School until his sophomore year when he quit and went to work for
his father who was a carpenter. His father built several houses in the
Isabel community. Dale later was the proprietor of the Golden Rule Service
Station from 1928 until 1931.
In 1931 he went to work for the Farmers Elevator when the petroleum
division was added. He was employed there as service station manager and
petroleum deliverer for 37 years.
Dale was elected Mayor of Isabel in 1945 and also served as City
Councilman for several terms. He was a member of the Masonic and Odd Fellows
Lodges of Isabel and held several offices in both organizations.
Dale married Hester May Murray on July 9, 1926 in Hutchinson. Hester
was born on a farm about five miles northeast of Isabel on July 14, 1906
and was the daughter of Roderick and Louisa Murray. She was the youngest
girl in a family of five brothers. She attended Social Plains grade school
and then finished high school in Isabel. She worked as a telephone operator
at the Isabel Central Office until a son was born in 1929, then she worked
as a part time operator and kept school teachers in her home. She was a
member of the Eastern Star and Rebekah Lodges, and held many offices in
both of these organizations. She also belonged to several social clubs in
Isabel.
Dale and Hester were both active members of the Methodist Church. They
moved to Pratt, Kansas in 1971. Dale died July 2, 1980 and Hester died on
March 13, 1982. They are both laid to rest in Greenlawn Cemetery in Pratt.
They had one son, Richard, who lives in Pratt. They also have two grand-
children and two great grandsons.
