Winifred Freeman
Winifred Freeman was born in 1914 to David R. and Myrtle A. (Warren)
Watkins near Medicine Lodge. She was the eldest of nine children; of the
nine, seven grew to adulthood. At the present there are five still living.
Our famly grew up on a farm between Medicine Lodge and Isabel. We all
attended a country school named Eldred and went to Medicine Lodge High
School with the exception of Corrine Watkins. She attended High School in
Isabel.
Winifred attended college at Fort Hays Teachers College, college in
Alva, Oklahoma and took some courses in Pratt College. She started her
teaching career in a country school (Amber) in 1936. She married Clair
Freeman in 1936. They had one son, Dillman. She taught school in the
rural schools for five years. Her husband passed away in 1939 and her
son passed away in 1971.
In 1942 Winifred taught third and fourth grade. In 1943 she went to
Kiowa for four years. In 1947 she came back to Isabel to teach. She taught
in the third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grades during her
teachintg there. In 1970 the school was closed and she finished her teaching
career in Medicine Lodge Intermediate School. She retired in 1979 after
teaching 41 years.
In 1953 my mother came to live with me after Father passed away in 1951.
She lived with me most of the time. She enjoyed her live in Isabel. She
always had a garden. She passed away in 1983 at the age of 95.
My sister Carrie Watkins taught school in Isabel for two years. She
went to Kiowa and taught four years. She started teaching in Pratt in 1950.
She passed away in 1979. I moved to Pratt in 1982.
Corrine Watkins lived with me while going to high school in Isabel. She
worked for the Barber County Superintendent. She then went to Pratt to work
for Special Education. She now is the bookkeeper and clerk of the board. She
has been with them for 18 years. One of my brothers is on a farm near Nashville.
One is retired and lives in Colorado Springs. The other is retired and lives
in Medicine Lodge.
