George Goodenough
George Washington Goodenough was born November 8, 1928 at Humansville,
Missouri; second child of four born to James Amsa Goodenough (German and
English) and Mary Jane Kennedy (Scotch-Irish and Indian). His father's
family migrated to New York wehre he was born. They traveled on through
Missouri up to Mr. Rose, South Dakota. As a young man of 15, he rode
guard on wagon trains through Indian territory. His family settled back in
Missouri where he met and married Mary Kenney.
George grew up around his home town but spent several summers in
Oklahoma working with a harvest crew. He met a girl, Kay Johnson in Longdale,
Oklahoma and they were married after her family had moved to Medicine Lodge,
Kansas.
George served in the Army during the Korean War. They have one child,
Constance Jean Goodenough (Jeannie) born May 18, 1955. Jeannie is married
to David Beeman and lives in Chandler, Arizona. She has two sons, Chris
and Jeff from a previous marriage.
George and Kay were divorced in 1966. George married a second time
to Fern Ellen (Moore) McCray. Fern is the daughter of Franklin and Marjorie
Moore of Garden City, Missouri. She has three children and five grand-
children from a previous marriage. Lynn and LaVonne McCray of Wichita,
Kansas have two children: Sarah and Joshua. Debbie and Don Grice of
Heyburn, Idaho. She has one son, Justin, from a previous marriage to Jerry
Shaddox, Isabel, Kansas. Billy McCray of Heyburn, Idaho has two daughters,
Tina and Robin, from previous marriages.
George and Fern met in Wichita, Kansas. George moved Fern to Isabel,
Kansas in 1969 where his sister Dorothy Hawkins was living. They were
married December 24, 1970 at the Sawyer Methodist Church.
George worked as a janitor for the Isabel school and was later
employed at the Coop. He served on the Isabel City Council. Fern worked at
the Isabel Grocery Store.
They moved to Heyburn, Idaho on November 9, 1976. Both were employed
at J.R. Simplot Co.
George was laid to rest January 30, 1985 at the Isabel cemetery. Fern
still resides in Idaho.
