Virgil and Rola met at a lawn party at the Byrd home in Isabel. The
     Byrd's home was directly across the street from the schoolhouse on south
     Main Street. Virgil was born February 28, 1900, the son of Ed and Phenia
     (Kilmer) Gray. They farmed in the Nashville area. Virgil had two sisters
     Phoebe and Hazel.
          Rola was the daughter of William and Emma Phipps born on September 27,
     1900 in Indiana, moving to Kansas in 1961 and has spent her life at Isabel.
     She had two brothers and four sisters. Rola and Virgil were married in 1922
     in Wichita at a double wedding with her sister Thelma and Roy Parkey.
          Virgil farmed with his father for a time in Kingman County then later
     worked in the oil fields for many years. Rola helped cook in the school
     lunch program  many years which was first served in the downstairs of the
     IOOF Hall and later moved into the school after the addition was made. Later
     she worked as a nurse's aide at the Medicine Lodge Hospital.
          Their children are Bill (deceased), Robert of Washington, Iowa; Jack
     (deceased); Don, Olathe, Kansas. Jane, Mrs. Elmer Rogers, Siloam Springs,
     Arkansas. The children all attended the Isabel School.
