Virginia Lawrenz Guhl
All of my school years were spent attending the Isabel schools. There
were fourteen in my graduating class of 1950. Our family lived on a farm
southwest of Isabel and travelled the seven and one-half miles to school
each day inthe family car. Being the youngest of the six children of Henry
and Ella Morisse Lawrenz, it never became my duty to drive to school. When
I entered high school bus service was offered to students in the Crooked
Creek and Pleasant Valley districts. With many misgivings I drove to school
the first day of my freshman year but then was somewhat disappointed when
told the bus would commence picking me up the next day.
After graduating from high school I worked for Pratt County Title Co.
and Baker Insurance in Pratt, both owned by the same management. It was
during this time (1953) I met and married Louis Guhl Jr. (J.R.). Shortly
after our marriage he was notified he was to be inducted in to the Army.
Basic training was at Ft. Bliss, Texas and Ft. Lee, Virginia. I was able to
be with him in Virginia and hoped to travel the world. Fate would not have
it that way and we were sent to Ft. Riley, Kansas. In 1956 we traded military
life for farm life and moved to Haven, Kansas, my husband's home town. We
lived on the farm site originally purchased by the family in 1902. We have
four children. They are: Lisa, Susan, Bill, and Becky.
After our youngest was established in kindergarten I started working
part-time at First National Travel Agency in Hutchinson. This soon developed
into a full-time position. It is an interesting profession, filled with all
the anxieties that come with making arrangements for group tours. Besides
many visits within the continental United States, Canada, Alaska and Hawaii,
I have visited more than 30 countries abroad. My husband has accompanied me
on most of the trips. It makes all the hard work worthwhile.
We do strictly grain farming. Just as in my growing up years I am still
a sports fan and my husband and I attend most school events. All of our
children and their spouses graduated from Haven High School and two of our
granddaughters attend the Haven Schools.
