Delavinia Harding Guthrie
Delavinia (Dellie) Harding was born December 20, 1919 near Isabel,
Kansas. She was the daughter of Ed and Christine (Suhler) Harding, who
farmed in the Nashville and Isabel area for a great many years. She has
two brothers Walter and Earl who now reside in Pratt, Kansas. A younger
brother Leslie and half sister Mary are deceased.
Delavinia started school in Isabel, September, 1926 and graduated
from there in 1938. She worked for Bell's Market, owned and operated by
Bob and Blanche Bell, for two years.
Delavinia, Ed and Walter played for many old time dances in the
area. Ed was quite a fiddle player and they entered quite a number of
old time fiddling contests.
Delavinia married Gail W. Guthrie on May 29, 1942 at Pratt, Kansas.
He was the son of Clyde and Alice (Rhea) Guthrie and was born June 1, 1921
near Sawyer, Kansas. He worked for the telephone company for a while after
they were married.
In the fall of 1943, Delavinia, Gail and small daughter Gloria Jean,
moved to Tacoma, Washington, where they have resided ever since. Gail
worked in the shipyards during World War II. In 1946 he went to work for a
furniture manufacturing concern and retired in 1985. Delavinia worked for
the Fern Hill Laundromat and Dry Cleaning shop for seventeen years, retiring
in 1981.
Delavinia and Gail have five children: Jeannie Hollesen, Spanaway,
Washington; Larry and Bonnie of Tacoma and Gayla Matter, also of Tacoma;
Donna Wilson lives at Clinton, Washington on beautiful Whidbey Island. They
also have eleven grandchildren and one great grandchild. One small grand-
daughter was lost in a rafting accident in 1980.
Gail and Delavinia enjoy camping, fishing and hunting and go on these
trips whenever possible. But most of all they enjoy their familiy and their
retirement.
