Carlton L. Hakanson
I was born April 9, 1924 three miles north of Isabel on the Blackwelder
place. My parents were Carl and Minnie Hakanson. My family consisted of
half-brother Vernon Dye, half sister Velma Dye, full brother Clyde, myself,
Harold, Helen and Roxie.
I attended the first grade at Isabel where my teacher was Maurine Knight.
The next seven grades were attended at Sand Creek. I graduated from high
school at Sawyer, Kansas in 1942.
On October 9th, 1942 I enlisted in the U.S. Air Corps and was trained
to be an aerial gunner on a B-24 bomber crew. We flew 28 bombing raids
over Germany and France during 1944. I was awarded five air medals and nine
battle stars for these actions.
My half brother Vernon Dyd was killed in a plane crash and Clyde was
killed in action in France. I was discharged on October 9, 1945 and returned
to Isabel where I became a farmer and brick and stone mason.
In 1949 I married Darwinne Hudson of Isabel. We had two daughters
Sherry Jo and Sheila Jill.
In 1966 Darwinne and I were divorced with her retaining custody of
Sherry and Sheila.
In 1969 I married Carol Hartman Crawford who had a boy Paul Crawford
by a previous marriage. In 1970 we had a daughter Catherine Muriel.
In 1984 we sold our farm and moved to Canon City, Colorado where in
1985 Carol passed away.
At the present time Cathy, Paul and I live in Canon City. Sherry Jo
lives in Wichita and Sheila Jill O'Connor lives in Pratt, Kansas.
