Minnie Hakanson
Minnie Miller was born August 15, 1896 in Pike County, Illinois. At
the age of nine she came by train to Kansas with her parents, George and
Martha Miller, and their eight children. They settled on a farm northwest
of Isabel.
She married Jasper (Jap) Dye of Isabel on February 13, 1913. He was
employed at Bennetts Store. His parents operated a cafe in Isabel. Two
children, Vernon and Velma, were born to them. Jap died from the flu on
November 14, 1918. Minnie did sewing to support her small children.
She married Carl Hakanson on July 15, 1921. Five children were born
to them: Clyde, Carlton, Harold, Helen and Roxie.
During the early thirties the family moved from Isabel to a farm
northwest of Isabel. The depression and dust bowl years were difficult for
everyone. The war years followed and Vernon and Clyde lost their lives in
this conflict.
Carl and Minnie moved their family back to Isabel. Carl moved their
house from north Main street to the farm just east of Isabel. In 1950 they
purchased the Knight property and lived there in semi-retirement until the
time of Carl's death on March 7, 1960. The following summer Minnie moved to
Pratt, Kansas. A short time later, she returned to Isabel. "Isabel is my
home", she said. The Knight place was home again as she took up her life
anew among old friends.
All her children considered Isabel as "home" to them; all had attended
Isabel schools and churches and participated in sports and community projects.
The road leading to the Knight place was home for as long as Minnie could
live alone.
Time takes its' toll and on May 27, 1984, Minnie departed this life.
She was placed beside Carl in the Isabel cemetery. She was 87.
The children are scattered but their roots are cherished memories. Mr.
and Mrs. Harold Hyatt (Roxie) live in Anaheim, California. Mr. and Mrs.
Harold Hakanson (Jean Fussel, Medicine Lodge) live in Madera, California.
Carlton Hakanson lives in Canon City, Colorado. Mr. and Mrs. Everett Dauner
(Velma) live in Topeka, Kansas. Mr. and Mrs. Lester Charles (Helen) live in
Wichita, Kansas.
As of this date, the family now numbers seventy-six persons.
