Albert Heublein
August 23, 1942, a fourth generation moved to the Heublein farm when
Albert and Fern with their nine week old son, John, became residents there.
Albert, the only son of John and Lena (Corbin) Heublein was born ond
the farm July 3, 1918. His grandfather, Michael Heublein came from Neuhaus,
Saxony, Germany, to Hope, Kansas where his wife, *Gretchen, died and was
buried. He moved to the Isabel property September 1908. Albert's father died
in 1924, his mother in 1963.
My parents were Ralph and Edna (Rogers) Phillips of Medicine Lodge. I was
born September 17, 1918 at my grandparents U.G. and Willa (McCluney) Rogers'
place near 99 Springs when my father was in World War I.
I attended first and second grade and Albert attended three or four years
at Isabel School. We were married October 20, 1940 and lived in Medicine Lodge
until we moved to Isabel. Albert worked in Roy Travis' Food Store as produce
manager and I worked for Palmer Abstract. In addition to our son, John, we
have two daughters, Kathryn and Carol Jean.
Many happy memories come to mind as we think of the years we lived at
Isabel - the good neighbors, the school and Methodist Church where our children
received good basic education and religious training. Albert and I were Cub
Schout and 4-H Club leaders as well as bing involved in church and school
activities.
Although, we returned to Medicine Lodge a few years ago, we have roots at
Isabel that can never be pulled up or abandoned. Albert is still farming with
no plan to retire.
One of the hardest decisions to make is moving one's church membership.
We did that last year and are active in the United Methodist Church at
Medicine Lodge. I am president of the UMW and am serving as an officer in the
Winfield District. I am a member of Valley Builders EHU and chairman of the
county safety committee involved in labeling township roads for emergency
vehicles.
My favorite project, outside of my family which includes eight wonderful
grandchildren, is portraying Carry Nation. I enjoy meeting people who come to
visit the Home. I give talks about her at various organizations, schools and
churches. My schedule is often 9 months ahead. I have appeared in T.V.
documentaires and have been interviewed by various newspapers including the
Los Angeles Times and Kansas City Times which in turn are sold to other papers
across the country.
Life gets complicated but never boring.
